An entity seeks to crowdfund the $10 million application fee for an LCK franchise slot.

Gamer Republic Seeks to Join LCK with $20 Million Kickstarter Campaign

Gamer Republic, a California-based startup, has launched a Kickstarter campaign with the goal of buying into the LCK (League of Legends Champions Korea) in 2021. The campaign aims to raise $20 million, which includes a $10 million application fee and additional funds to operate the team for two years.

Despite lacking sponsorships or investors to help cover the hefty fee, Gamer Republic is serious about joining one of the most competitive League of Legends leagues globally.

One surprising aspect of the campaign is that Kickstarter backers will have complete control over how the team is managed, provided the fundraising goal is met and Riot approves Gamer Republic’s application.

Supporters who pledge $570 or more will receive a multi-year membership with the team, granting them increasing decision-making power based on their pledge amount. Backers will vote on matters such as player selection, manager and coach appointments, player appearances and replacements, and the pick and ban draft phase.

As an additional incentive, Gamer Republic promises to distribute “prize money” to its members if the team achieves success in the LCK or Worlds. The backer with the best judgment throughout the year will have their name engraved on any trophies won by the team.

Gamer Republic consists of experienced game designers, engineers, and executives who have worked for leading game companies in Korea. The Kickstarter campaign has 36 days remaining to reach its goal; otherwise, all pledges will be refunded. Currently, the campaign has raised just under $22,000.

Gamer Republic is one of the 21 organizations that have applied for a permanent position in the LCK after Riot Korea’s announcement of the league’s transition to a franchised system.
