4 European LCS teams allegedly seek entry into North American LCS

European LCS Teams Apply to Join North American League Championship Series

According to an ESPN report, four European LCS teams have applied to join the North American league.

G2 Esports, Fnatic, Splyce, and Misfits have all submitted applications to the new franchised NA league, as confirmed by sources close to the teams and Riot Games.

Uncertainty Surrounding the European LCS

When Riot announced franchising in North America and China, but not in other regions, it left the future of the European LCS uncertain and Riot has remained silent on the matter. In June, Riot stated that it had no plans to franchise the EU LCS.

Implications of Franchising on European Teams

The decision to franchise the North American league ahead of other regions has significant implications on the balance of power and team earnings. Franchised NA league teams will enjoy revenue sharing, while EU LCS teams are left wondering when they will receive similar recognition.

Despite good international results, the EU LCS struggles to match the viewership levels of NA. Lower fan interest, inferior infrastructure, a lack of revenue sharing, and the constant threat of relegation place EU teams at a significant disadvantage. It comes as no surprise that four of the best European teams are exploring the option to join the NA LCS.

Challenges and Unlikelihood of Moving to NA

However, it would be difficult for Riot to accept their applications considering the teams’ strong ties to the EU LCS. Additionally, Splyce and Misfits would need to replace the majority of their players to comply with Riot’s region locking rules if their applications are accepted.

Despite the small chances of success, the fact that these teams are applying speaks volumes about the current state of the EU LCS. While Riot sees Europe as a great opportunity, it seems that the teams do not agree.
