100 Thieves Make History by Winning the 2021 LCS Championship
100 Thieves have made history by claiming the 2021 LCS Championship title. In a best-of-five series, they defeated Team Liquid with a score of three games to zero. This victory is significant because it is the first time in the eight-year history of the LCS that a team outside of the league’s “big four” (Cloud9, TSM, Team Liquid, and CLG) has won the championship.
Three years after their first competitive split in 2018, where they reached the LCS Grand Finals but lost to Team Liquid, 100 Thieves were able to break the North American mold and secure the championship title.
Team Liquid came into the series as the fifth seed in the playoffs but had been performing exceptionally well, winning every previous match in the postseason. They had also won three straight matches in the upper bracket and had a strong record of nine victories out of 13 games played during the playoffs. However, 100 Thieves proved to be unbeatable on this day, avenging their previous loss to Team Liquid in the bracket and emerging victorious.
With their victory, 100 Thieves have secured a Pool One berth at the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. They will advance straight to the Group Stage of the tournament, bypassing other regional champions. This is a significant achievement for the team, as they have not participated in Worlds since 2018 when they were eliminated in the Group Stage.
On the other hand, Team Liquid will also head to the Worlds Group Stage as a Pool Two team. They will compete against other international squads such as Gen.G, Fnatic, and PSG Talon. In last year’s tournament, Liquid had to play through the Worlds Play-in Stage before narrowly missing out on a Quarterfinal berth.
Riot has not announced the start date for this year’s World Championship yet. The tournament was relocated from China to Europe due to complications related to the Delta variant of COVID-19.
