Psyonix Reveals Rocket League’s Transition to Free-to-Play, Upcoming Seasons, and Ranking System

Rocket League Revamp: Tournaments, Seasons, and Ranked Mode Updates

Psyonix is preparing to launch Rocket League as a free-to-play game. In a recent announcement, the company shared more information about the revamp coming to tournaments, seasons, and ranked mode.

Cross-platform Progression

One exciting addition is the introduction of cross-platform progression. This means that players will be able to keep their level, gear, and ranks regardless of the system they play Rocket League on.

Season Changes

Once Rocket League goes free-to-play, Competitive Seasons, Competitive Tournaments, and the Rocket Pass will all follow the same schedule. The Rocket Pass will now be an extension of the ongoing season, rather than a separate entity. This means that when a new season starts, the corresponding Rocket Pass and Competitive Season will launch simultaneously.

New Ranks

Psyonix is introducing a new top rank called Supersonic Legend. Additionally, the previous top rank, Grand Champion, will be split into three different ranks: Grand Champion 1, Grand Champion 2, and Grand Champion 3. Players currently ranked in Grand Champion will be placed in Grand Champion 1 based on their performance in the new placement matches. Each rank will have its own set of season rewards and rank-specific titles.

Improved New Player Experience

To better accommodate new players, all ranks will now shift closer to the median, resulting in some players being ranked higher than usual. New players will also need to reach level 10 to access Ranked matches. A new tutorial and New Driver Challenges will be available to help them learn the basics and unlock items.

Other notable features include not requiring PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions to play Rocket League online on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch respectively. The Rocket ID system will merge with the Epic Friends list through the Epic Games Account. Heatseeker mode will be playable in private matches, a new easier bot difficulty will be added, new remixes will be included, and the Solo Standard Playlist will be removed.

Epic and Psyonix have not shared the exact date for the next update, but players can expect it around mid-September, with the free-to-play launch following shortly after.
