Helldivers 2 has been Sony’s fastest-selling launch game.
Helldivers 2 has set a new record for Sony’s fastest-selling launch title in history, surpassing God of War: Ragnarok.
Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies on PC and PlayStation 5 in its first 12 weeks of release, compared to 11 million in 10 weeks for God of War: Ragnarok in 2023.
As reported by VGC, Sony admitted Helldivers 2 has been “exceeding expectations” during a financial results call for the year ending March 31, 2024, as part of a record year for revenue for the gaming division.
The record year comes despite failing to meet PS5 console sales expectations, having shipped 20.8 million during the fiscal year, and the period until March 2025 is likely to suffer a revenue decline with “no large current franchise titles” in the next 12 months.
Helldivers 2’s sustained success is good news for Sony, despite the title’s rough few weeks following the controversial update that required PC users to link to a PSN account.
Sony eventually reversed the decision, but only after other Sony titles were also review bombed as a result of the news, and Helldivers 2 is still restricted to new players in the majority of countries where PSN is not available.
A response from Steam seemingly confirmed it was Sony’s decision to delist Helldivers 2 in some countries, showing that while the battle against the mandatory PSN connection has been won, the war is far from over.
Still, Helldivers 2 boasted a 24-hour peak on Steam of over 95,000 players in the past 24 hours, according to SteamDB, though this is significantly short of the all-time peak of over 450,000 set three months ago.
These figures do not include PlayStation gamers, therefore the total number of concurrent players is likely to be substantially greater.
