Rockstar Announces Plan to Shutdown GTA Online on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

Rockstar Announces Discontinuation of Grand Theft Online on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

The popular game Grand Theft Auto V, part of the GTA franchise, will no longer be available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 starting from Dec. 16, according to an announcement by Rockstar today. These were the consoles where the game was initially released in September 2013, with the online feature launching two weeks later on Oct. 1.

Transition to Newer Platforms

Rockstar stated, “As we continue to update and support the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto Online, as well as prepare for the upcoming releases of the enhanced versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, we will be shutting down the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA Online on December 16, 2021.” This means that website stat tracking on the Rockstar Games Social Club will also be discontinued for these versions of the game.

Changes to In-Game Purchases and Features

Starting from Sept. 15, players will no longer be able to purchase Shark Cash cards for GTA Online on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Therefore, it’s not advisable to spend money on virtual currency for these consoles, unless you’re just starting out. However, it’s important to note that these changes will not affect your access or progress in Story mode.

Impact on Other Games

In addition to GTA, website stat tracking for L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3 on the Rockstar Games Social Club will also be discontinued on Sept. 16 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Rockstar will be releasing the enhanced versions of GTA V and GTA Online for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on Nov. 11.
