Ranking the Top GTA Protagonists

Best GTA Characters Ranked: Who Takes the Top Spot?

As we eagerly anticipate the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, let’s take a moment to rank the best main characters in the franchise. Each character brings their own unique traits to the table, making this a tough decision.

Over the years, these GTA characters have evolved, gaining depth and complexity that has shaped their animated worlds. Each story is filled with pivotal moments that not only impact the game but also the characters themselves.

Having played all the GTA games, I can confidently present the ultimate list of the best characters:

10) Claude Speed

Claude Speed in GTA

This silent protagonist shouldn’t come as a surprise as the lowest-ranked character. It’s hard to relate to a character who lacks personality, earning him the last place.

9) Victor Vance

Victor Vance with another character pointing a gun in his back

Victor Vance’s story spans across Vice City and Vice City Stories, with the latter being his best performance. His relatable journey of providing for his family sets him apart from silent protagonists.

8) Johnny Klebitz

Johnny from GTA IV lost and the damned on a motorbike

The Lost and the Damned protagonist secures the eighth spot. His impactful presence made him one of the top 10 characters in the franchise, as evident from his appearance in GTA 5.

7) Michael De Santa

One of GTA 5’s main characters, Michael De Santa, grabs the seventh spot. Michael’s unique plotline, from rags to riches to falling back into his old life, sets him apart from other characters.

6) Franklin Clinton

Franklin in GTA V

Arguably the most likable character in GTA 5, Franklin is ambitious and smart. His compelling story of rising in the criminal world while balancing relationships makes him a standout.

5) Luis Lopez

Luis from the Ballad of Gay Tony in GTA IV

The Ballad of Gay Tony’s addition enhanced the GTA franchise, and Luis Lopez’s storyline was the best DLC addition. He may not be as eccentric as his boss, but he left a lasting impact.

4) Trevor Phillips

Trevor from GTA V holding his finger to his neck

Trevor, the franchise’s biggest wildcard, takes the fourth spot. His unhinged and dangerous personality creates a unique story as he tries to rekindle his relationship with Michael.

3) Tommy Vercetti

Tommy in GTA Vice City

Tommy Vercetti, a brilliant character in Vice City, takes the third spot. Voiced by Ray Liotta, Tommy’s story revolves around taking down the mafia, making him a joy to play as.

2) Niko Bellic

Niko from GTA IV in a suit

Niko Bellic, an immigrant seeking wealth and fame in Liberty City, ranks second. His story, alongside his cousin Roman, is unforgettable and filled with memes.

1) Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson

CJ in his trademark white singlet in GTA San Andreas

At the top spot, we have CJ, who shares the first place with Niko. CJ’s story is memorable and relatable, offering a refreshing contrast to Michael’s journey and making him an all-time classic.

It’s impossible not to love CJ. Stay tuned for more GTA updates!
