US Internet Traffic Records Shattered by Fortnite’s Season 5 Launch

Fortnite Season 5 Breaks Internet Traffic Records

Last Thursday, Fortnite’s highly anticipated fifth season kicked off with a bang, not only generating a lot of hype and expected changes but also shattering internet traffic records.

Akamai Technologies, a cloud service provider for media and software delivery based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, recently published a blog post highlighting the remarkable numbers produced by Fortnite during the launch of season five.

According to Nelson Rodriguez, Global Director of Media Industry Strategy at Akamai, “On Thursday, July 12, 2018, Akamai Technologies set a new record for the peak level of traffic delivered for a single video game on its network, surpassing 37 Tbps peak across all platforms. This massive traffic surge was driven by the launch of Epic Games’ cultural phenomenon: Fortnite, which introduced its Season 5 that day.”

Season five went live in the early hours of July 12, bringing a new Battle Pass filled with unlockable cosmetics, significant changes to the map, and the introduction of a new vehicle called the All-Terrain Kart.

Rodriguez further emphasized the magnitude of this traffic, stating, “To put this into perspective, this level of traffic would be like downloading the average mobile game 2.8 million times per minute. This not only showcases the ongoing success of Epic Games’ hit title but also the strength and resilience of the Akamai Intelligent Platform.”

Fortnite’s popularity continues to soar, with no signs of slowing down. Just recently, Epic Games announced at E3 2018 that Fortnite has now surpassed a staggering 125 million players across all platforms.
