No subscription required for online play of Fortnite on Switch

The Nintendo Switch’s Online Service to Launch in September

The Nintendo Switch’s online service, set to launch in September, will require gamers to pay in order to play online.

What Does the Online Service Offer?

For Nintendo account holders, the online service provides access to online multiplayer gaming, a library of classic NES games that is regularly updated, and cloud saving. It also includes various other noteworthy features.

Not All Games Require a Subscription

Interestingly, some games, such as Fortnite, Pokemon Quest, Paladins, and Fallout Shelter, do not require the Nintendo Switch online service to play online. An examination of free-to-play games on the Resetera forums found that these games did not include any disclaimer about requiring a subscription for online features.

Subscription Required for Paid Titles

However, paid titles with online features do state in their Nintendo eShop descriptions that a subscription will be required starting in the autumn.

Following in Sony’s Footsteps

This move by Nintendo follows a similar decision made by Sony, who allow players to play games like Warframe online with friends even without a PS Plus online subscription.

At present, Nintendo has not provided any information regarding their plans for free-to-play titles. It is possible that the requirement for a subscription could be added as the launch of the service draws closer.
