PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile Revenue Lags Behind Fortnite, Says Sensor Tower
In-app purchases were recently added to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile, but the revenue earnings fall short compared to its rival, Fortnite Mobile, according to Sensor Tower.
PUBG Mobile’s iOS Revenue
An estimated $700,000 was spent by players outside of China on the iOS version of PUBG Mobile. However, the report does not include Android sales since Fortnite is currently only available on iOS.
Fortnite Mobile’s First Week Numbers
During its initial seven days on iOS, Fortnite Mobile generated $3.7 million in a similar set of countries. This means that the total revenue for PUBG Mobile was only about one-fifth of Fortnite’s.
Sensor Tower also revealed that 48% of PUBG’s revenue came from the U.S., with Thailand (7%), Great Britain (5%), Canada (4%), and Russia (3%) rounding out the top five countries in terms of revenue contribution.
Fortnite’s Impressive Install Base
In comparison, during Fortnite’s first week, only 3.7 million users had downloaded the game. On the other hand, PUBG had an install base of 22 million users by the time in-app purchases were introduced this week.
The Benefits of Cross-Platform Play
One factor that contributes to Fortnite’s revenue success is the ability to carry over purchases between mobile, console, and PC versions of the game. In contrast, PUBG Mobile is a standalone entity with no connection to the PC or Xbox One versions.
The Difference in In-Game Purchases
Fortnite offers limited-time direct purchase options for skins, while PUBG generates most of its revenue through randomized loot boxes.
Fortnite’s Continued Dominance
For whatever reasons, Fortnite continues to dominate the battle royale genre and has now become more profitable on mobile as well.
