Fortnite’s in-game microtransactions yield more than $1 billion in revenue

Fortnite Surpasses $1 Billion in In-Game Purchase Revenue

Fortnite has reached a major milestone, surpassing $1 billion in revenue from in-game purchases alone, according to a report by SuperData Research.

SuperData’s report focuses on the rise of battle royale games, making it no surprise that Fortnite is a key player. In less than ten months since its release, Epic Games’ hit has crossed the $1 billion mark.

This is an impressive statistic, especially considering that Fortnite is free to play. All of its revenue has come from in-game purchases. Players must buy a currency called V-Bucks to use cosmetic skins for their characters.

Approximately 100 billion V-Bucks have been purchased by players, with each 100 V-Bucks translating to about $1. That’s a significant amount of money spent on outfits, gliders, pickaxes, and emotes.

The report also highlights the popularity of watching Fortnite. In May 2018, there were 574 million content hours watched across all platforms, surpassing other popular games like League of Legends, PUBG, and Dota 2. Fortnite accounted for 83 percent of the nearly 700 million total hours of battle royale content.

With Fortnite’s continuous growth and no signs of decline, SuperData’s report suggests that battle royale games are here to stay and not just a temporary trend.

As big-budget franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield add their own battle royale modes this fall, it is likely that the report’s prediction holds true.
