Square Enix President Calls for Greater Game Diversity

Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu has expressed concern about the lack of variety in the company’s game collection. He believes that they have become overly reliant on the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series.

In a recent investor Q&A session, Kiryu shared these thoughts. Although the session took place in November 2023, it has only been recently published in English, catching the attention of Eurogamer.

Positive Response to Final Fantasy 16

The Q&A session also revealed that Final Fantasy 16 surpassed internal expectations and contributed to an increase in net sales for Square Enix’s HD games sub-segment. The release of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster also played a part in this success.

However, Kiryu’s comments suggest that he wants the company to release Final Fantasy games less frequently, despite their popularity as the flagship franchise.
