V’s incompetence in Cyberpunk 2077 leads to failure in a basic task

The Latest Expansion of Cyberpunk 2077 Brings Back an Old-School Payphone

In the futuristic world of Cyberpunk 2077, where cyberware and high-tech implants are the norm, it’s rare to come across something old-fashioned. However, the game’s latest expansion introduces a fun interaction involving a public payphone.

On Sept. 27, a Cyberpunk player shared a video from the Phantom Liberty DLC, showcasing a scene where the protagonist, V, needs to use a retro payphone to make a call. V, not familiar with how to use such a device, looks at his sidekick, Johnny, with confusion.

Johnny smirks and gestures that V should put the phone to his ear, to which V responds with relief. Notably, Johnny refrains from making fun of V in this situation, much to the surprise of players. They believed he would have teased V for his lack of knowledge, although Johnny still finds it amusing.

While smartphones are prevalent in Night City and its technologically advanced society, public payphones are a rarity. This is why V’s lack of familiarity with the device is not surprising. People in the game know how phones work; it’s just that public payphones are hardly seen in 2077.

Players pointed out that even in real life, many individuals, especially younger ones, are not familiar with payphones. Some shared anecdotes of their own experiences, such as one fan whose niece reacted similarly when using a landline phone for the first time.

Another interesting observation made by players is the hand gesture Silverhand uses to imitate making a phone call. This gesture might become obsolete in the future. With the rise of smartphones, younger generations are now mimicking a flat hand for their phone gestures because of the shape of modern devices.
