Reshaping The Witcher 4’s Development Strategy: The Influence of Cyberpunk 2077

Reworking Lessons Learned from Cyberpunk 2077 for Future Releases

CD Projekt Red developers have taken valuable lessons from the initial struggles of Cyberpunk 2077 and are determined to avoid similar issues with future releases.

A recent interview with Colin Walder on Oct. 15 shed light on the studio’s reflections on past releases and their plans for the future. It’s important that their actions speak louder than words, and the team is committed to making meaningful changes.

Post-release, Cyberpunk 2077 faced significant performance issues, particularly on older consoles like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. These problems proved expensive, with developers spending around $100 million to address them.

Having let down fans’ high expectations from the Witcher series, the developers have learned from their mistakes and are determined to rebuild their relationship with the community.

To prevent a recurrence, Walder shared that they are implementing demo tests and performance runs from the early stages of The Witcher 4’s development, codenamed the “Polaris project.” Through rigorous testing, they aim to optimize console performance, stabilize frame rates, and minimize bugs.

This positive change contrasts with the late-stage performance testing of Cyberpunk, which left little time for resolving issues and ultimately affected the game’s release.

Moving forward, The Witcher 4 aims to provide an exceptional console performance, ensuring an equal experience for players across multiple platforms.

CD Projekt Red’s implementation of the 2.0 update for Cyberpunk demonstrates their readiness to learn from their mistakes. With these valuable lessons, they are determined to create a worthy successor in The Witcher franchise.
