Developer of Cyberpunk 2077 suggests the game avoids happy endings due to ‘genre conventions,’ yet the underlying issue remains capitalism

Why Cyberpunk 2077 Doesn’t Have Good Endings, According to CD Projekt Red’s Senior Writer

Cyberpunk 2077 has been criticized for its lack of satisfying endings, and the game’s newest DLC, Phantom Liberty, didn’t change that. Magda Zych, CD Projekt Red’s senior writer, recently spoke about the game’s story and why it doesn’t have happy endings.

In an interview with gamingbolt, Zych explained that the reason for the bleak endings in Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty is due to the genre rules. Being a noir game, happy endings have no place in this genre. Zych emphasized that the goal was to create an immersive experience that reflects reality, and in reality, not every story has a happy ending.

Furthermore, Zych stated that the lack of good endings actually increases the emotional impact and immersion of the game. The realistic and somber conclusions hit players harder and make the experience more memorable.

Although Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty don’t offer satisfying endings, many players have found themselves invested in the story. Zych’s perspective is that the lack of happy endings adds a sense of realism to the narrative and encourages players to replay the game to explore different outcomes.

In addition, Zych sees the genre as a warning for humanity. She believes that cyberpunk stories serve as cautionary tales about the potential consequences of making wrong decisions and the dangers of an uber-capitalist society.
