According to the patch notes for Update 2.0, old saves will be compatible with 2.0 and “Phantom Liberty,” but with a major catch. Existing saves played with Update 2.0 will require the characters to be respec’d from scratch, and any premade builds will be useless due to sweeping changes to armor and cyberware.
That’s why CD Projekt Red and we recommend starting a new game after updating to 2.0, although it’s not technically required. The changes introduced are massive, affecting the game from the very beginning: a completely revamped perk system, vehicle combat, updates to enemy AI, a new netrunning system, new weapon mods, and economy changes. To experience it all naturally, starting a new playthrough is the best option.
Players will have a few days to familiarize themselves with the new systems before “Phantom Liberty” is released. The expansion becomes available after completing the Voodoo Boys questline, so there’s a substantial portion of the story to play through. Seeing Johnny’s Arasaka Tower flashback for the first time will be worth it to fully enjoy Update 2.0.
