Phil Spencer hints at highly impressive Xbox hardware amidst growing speculation about a handheld console

Xbox Teases the Possibility of a Handheld Console

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has sparked even more speculation about an upcoming handheld console from Microsoft by hinting at the development of “pretty awesome” hardware. While no handheld device was revealed at the recent Xbox showcase during Summer Game Fest, persistent rumors suggest that an announcement or release may be on the horizon.

The speculation surrounding the rumored Xbox handheld device began gathering momentum after leaked Microsoft documents surfaced during the FTC trial related to the Activision Blizzard takeover. Despite Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s comments that “so much has changed” since the leaks, the rumors have persisted. Spencer’s recent comments, however, appear to be the most substantial hint regarding the potential handheld console.

Speaking at IGN Live during Summer Game Fest, Phil Spencer addressed the rumors and teased Microsoft’s hardware by calling it “pretty awesome.” He expressed his excitement about it, promising more details in the future. When questioned about whether the potential handheld device would focus on cloud streaming or compete directly with the likes of the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch, Spencer leaned towards a dedicated gaming platform, emphasizing the importance of local gameplay.

If Microsoft indeed ventures into the handheld gaming market, it would represent a distinct departure from Sony’s approach. While Sony achieved surprising success with the PlayStation Portal last year, Microsoft’s strong ties to PC gaming could present exciting opportunities for a combined PC and handheld device.

Handheld gaming was traditionally dominated by Nintendo, especially after Sony discontinued the PSP and Vita. However, with the recent introduction of devices like the Steam Deck, the handheld gaming market could become highly competitive in the near future.
