Millions of Germans Engage in Esports Enthusiasm

The Growing Popularity of Esports in Germany

On November 19, the “League of Legends” world championship will take place in Seoul, and millions of Germans are expected to tune in for this thrilling esports tournament. According to a survey conducted by game – The German Games Industry Association in collaboration with market research company YouGov, esports has become a major part of media consumption for many Germans. In fact, 23% of Germans, which is around 16 million people, have already watched an esports tournament or match. This number has increased by over 4 million since 2020. The younger generation has shown particularly strong interest, with 48% of 16-24-year-olds and 45% of 25-34-year-olds tuning in to esports broadcasts. Additionally, 27% of viewers have their favorite esports teams that they passionately support. Overall, 77% of Germans are familiar with esports, which is a significant increase from 2020’s 71%.

Active Participation in Esports

Esports in Germany is not only about watching; 23% of all gamers in the country, which is approximately 10 million people, actively participate in esports competitions, whether through LAN parties or online leagues. Among 25-34-year-old gamers, 42% are engaged in esports activities, compared to only 18% in 2020.

The Recognition and Support for Esports in Germany

Esports organizations from Germany, such as BIG, G2 esports, and SK Gaming, have gained international recognition. Esports events have become popular in the country, with millions of viewers tuning in to tournaments and leagues. Several federal states have recognized this phenomenon and are providing support. For instance, Schleswig-Holstein holds official state championships and has a funded esports regional center. North Rhine-Westphalia supports its own talent team through the esports player foundation, and Munich will host the 2024 League of Legends EMEA Championship. This kind of political support is crucial in making Germany a more attractive destination for gamers and fans.
