TL’s new leader Zai embraces the weight of MATUMBAMAN’s legacy and his larger-than-life persona

Zai Takes on New Leadership Role for Team Liquid at The International 2023

Zai, a renowned professional player in the Dota 2 community, has embraced a new challenge this year as Team Liquid’s second-in-command. This position became available after MATUMBAMAN retired in the previous year, and Zai has flourished in his new role.

Veteran player MATUMBAMAN was not only known for his consistent and reliable gameplay but also for his excellent leadership behind the scenes. His departure left a void within the Dota 2 roster. The team required a new leader to support Insania, and Zai, with his wealth of experience, stepped up to the plate.

During an interview at The International 2023, Zai mentioned, “The role Matu kind of figured out for himself towards the end of his tenure is something I have kind of carried that torch a little bit this year I think. Kind of stepping into a leadership kind of role.”

The role Zai has taken on isn’t just about performing well in the game. It also involves having a say in team drafts, ensuring everyone understands and executes the plan before, during, and after matches, and maintaining the team’s focus. MATUMBAMAN excelled in this leadership role, and his absence left a gap within the team.

Today, Zai is striving to follow in MATUMBAMAN’s footsteps.

Zai also mentioned that playing alongside strong personalities like Arteezy, Kuroky, Puppey, and Sumail has allowed him to adapt and fit into previous teams. This experience has prepared him to fulfill any role required. He acknowledges learning a lot about leadership from Puppey, and although he doesn’t consider himself a natural-born leader like Puppey or MATUMBAMAN, they inspire him.

Zai is putting in great effort in his new leadership role for Team Liquid, and it’s already showing positive results at The International 2023. Under his guidance, Liquid has secured the top spot in Group B with seven wins and only one loss.
