LGD Gaming’s Maybe expresses remorse for racist remarks on Weibo

Yao “Maybe” Lu Faces Discipline for Inappropriate Comments on Social Media

Yao “Maybe” Lu, a top player in the Dota 2 scene, is facing disciplinary action from his organization, LGD Gaming, after making inappropriate comments towards one of his followers on Weibo.

Contributions to LGD Gaming

Maybe has been a valuable member of LGD Gaming since joining the team in 2015. After finishing in second place at The International 2018, LGD was in a strong position for the next season as well.

Controversy before TI9

However, just before heading to TI9, LGD had to address a social media controversy involving Maybe. In a conversation with a follower about the viability of All Pick mode, Maybe made comments implying that Chinese players have limited hero choices compared to players in other regions.

Offensive Remarks and LGD’s Response

Instead of responding rationally to the follower’s points, Maybe made highly offensive remarks, using derogatory terms. LGD swiftly took action in response to the incident and issued a statement apologizing for Maybe’s behavior. Maybe was fined 50,000 RMB (approximately $7,274 USD) and LGD pledged to educate its players on proper social media use.

This incident follows similar controversies in the esports scene, highlighting the need for players to be mindful of their behavior online. However, since this issue occurred on Weibo and not during a match, it is unlikely that Valve will take further action like they did in a previous case. Maybe will likely face no further consequences beyond the fine from LGD.

The International 2019 will begin on August 15, with LGD Gaming competing as one of the top-seeded teams.
