Dota 2’s Latest Update Removes Role Selection for High-Rank Matches

Valve Removes Role Selection in High-Rank Dota 2 Matches

In their ongoing effort to enhance Dota 2’s matchmaking, Valve has released an update that eliminates role selection in high-rank games. This update comes just a day after the previous one.

From now on, role selection will be turned off automatically in any match containing a player with an MMR score above 7,500.

The goal of this update is to improve the quality of high-rank matches by allowing experienced players to freely choose heroes without being restricted to specific roles. It enables teams to swap lanes, employ unique strategies, and counter opponents’ drafts by playing out of their usual positions if necessary.

Valve employee Jeff Hill clarified the purpose of this change when questions arose on the Dota 2 subreddit. He stated, “Right now, it’s set for games that include a 7.5k+ MMR player. But we’re fine-tuning that value and monitoring the queue times and match quality to determine the best setting.”

This update, along with the reintroduction of strict solo matchmaking for the fast queue, aims to reduce matchmaking time and enhance overall game quality. Unlike the solo option, role selection removal is automatic when the game meets the necessary criteria.

Valve’s decision to test this update is driven by a combination of factors. While it has the potential to improve matchmaking times and game quality, it also grants players more freedom to play out of position, potentially affecting team performance.

Valve will closely analyze the data from high MMR games to determine whether to fully implement the update or revert back to role selection.
