CEO of Newbee discusses challenges faced by Chinese roster and acquisition of ex-Forward players

Newbee’s CEO CuZn clarifies organization’s past and future plans

Newbee’s CEO CuZn took to Twitter to address the organization’s previous issues and share their goals for the future, including discussing their management of both Dota 2 rosters.

Sponsoring ex-Forward Gaming roster for the International

Newbee has agreed to sponsor the ex-Forward Gaming roster for the International tournament. CuZn makes it clear that the sponsorship contract is only for the event. The North American players will compete under the Newbee banner and not as a separate club. This decision was made due to time constraints, as they were unable to create new logos, team banners, jerseys, and other materials.

Expanding as an international organization

CuZn expresses Newbee’s intention to broaden their horizons and become an international organization. The CEO mentions Fnatic as an example, a European organization with a team based in Southeast Asia since 2015. CuZn states that further discussions will be held after TI9 to explore these aspirations.

Rebuilding the main Chinese roster

CuZn confirms that the main Chinese roster will be rebuilt at the end of the season. However, Newbee needs to navigate carefully with dual rosters to comply with Valve’s rules on multiple organizations attending TI. It is possible that they may face issues with Valve’s regulations on this matter.

Challenges in rebuilding the roster

CuZn acknowledges that the rebuilding process did not go as smoothly as planned. Established organizations were seeking players from the TI7 grand finalists, offering high salaries. Additionally, Newbee has not received some payments from outgoing player transfers. As a result, the decision was made to focus on their own youth players instead.

Uncertainty surrounding the players’ future

After their TI7 run, the main roster’s performance has been disappointing. They have only won three tournaments since then, leading to uncertainties about the players’ future, particularly midlane superstar Song “Sccc” Chun.

Main Chinese roster’s fate uncertain

The fate of Newbee’s main Chinese roster remains uncertain as the team’s efforts to improve have not yielded the desired results. This led to the organization missing out on The International for the first time in history, until the acquisition of the ex-Forward Gaming roster.

TI9 participation

For now, Sccc and his squad will have to watch TI from the sidelines, anticipating potential changes. Johan “pieliedie” Åström’s team will represent Newbee at TI9, which begins on August 15.
