An Entire Team of AI Bots to Compete at the International 8

OpenAI Five AI Dota 2 Team Set to Take on Professional Players at The International 8

Back in August 2017, the audience at Key Arena in Seattle witnessed an impressive display of artificial intelligence as OpenAI’s AI defeated some of the top Dota 2 players in 1-vs-1 combat. Now, in 2018, the stakes are higher as OpenAI Five prepares to face off against professional players in a full five-man Dota 2 team at The International 8 in Vancouver.

OpenAI Five, the same AI that has mastered games like Chess and Go, has made significant improvements in its Dota 2 gameplay since its debut at The International 7. The AI team has engaged in matches against itself, allowing it to adapt and improve its skills. It has even managed to defeat a team of 5,500 MMR players. While it hasn’t yet faced a professional team, it’s important to note that players above the 5,000 MMR bracket only make up 1 percent of the Dota 2 playerbase.

Open AI Five has developed its own playstyle, which centers around setting up early ganks at the expense of its own safe laners’ farm. It transitions smoothly into the mid-game and prioritizes providing support players with gold and XP in the early game. The AI’s strategies have been executed so well that professional Dota 2 commentator William “Blitz” Lee himself praised its teamwork and strategy.

The self-learning process that OpenAI Five utilizes is impressive. With a total of 128,000 CPU cores, the AI gains the equivalent of 900 years of experience per day across its entire five-player team. This allows it to learn and adapt to the game at an incredibly fast pace. Within just a few days of starting the experiment, OpenAI Five went from being disorganized to executing complex strategies like contesting rune spawns and ganking.

At last year’s Key Arena event, famous Dota 2 players like Danil “Dendi” Ishutin struggled against OpenAI. Now, we eagerly await the showdown between OpenAI Five and the best Dota 2 players the world has to offer at The International 8.
