Ame’s TI victory eludes him, but Yatoro etches his legacy on Dota 2’s Aegis of Champions

Wang “Ame” Chunyu Secures Legacy with Thoughtful Gesture

Wang “Ame” Chunyu, known as the Uncrowned King of Dota 2, solidified his legacy with a meaningful gesture from Illya “Yatoro” Mulyarchuk after winning The International 2023.

When a team emerges victorious at TI, both the players and the organization’s name are engraved onto the Aegis of Champions. This tradition holds true in real life and in the Dota 2 world. Valve asks players to submit their usernames for this occasion, and Yatoro chose to keep the Kanji character next to his name, pronounced as “Ame.”

According to machine translations, this character translates to “rain” in Japanese, and it is also pronounced as “yu” in Chinese, similar to Ame’s real name. Although Ame came close to lifting the Aegis himself, he always fell just short.

Yatoro has expressed his admiration for Ame on multiple occasions, stating that he extensively studies Ame’s gameplay to learn from him.

In 2018, OG defeated PSG.LGD to win The International 8. In 2021, Team Spirit astonished the world by defeating PSG.LGD to claim victory at The International 10. Ame’s TI history includes third and fourth-place finishes as well.

Dota 2 fans believed that Ame would eventually win TI himself, but the star player announced his retirement from competitive Dota 2, alongside Lu “Somnus” Yao. Both players left the scene without a championship title, prompting Somnus to reconsider his retirement and make a comeback.

On the other hand, Ame has been more dedicated to his retirement, only making a return to professional Dota 2 to form a Chinese super team for the 19th Asian Games. He may come back for another shot at glory, but even if he doesn’t, his name will forever be etched alongside Yatoro’s on the Aegis.
