Abusive Images Circulating Through Dota 2’s Guild Recruitment System

Inappropriate Images in Dota 2 Guilds Causing Concern among Streamers

While playing Dota 2, receiving inappropriate images might be the last thing players expect. However, it seems that some oversights in the Guild system, recently added to the game as part of the International 2020 Battle Pass, are being exploited.

Players have reported that they are being shown various inappropriate images when invited to join a Guild, with no way to avoid them. This is because players can upload images as their Guild banner or avatar, and there is currently no filter system to keep those images PG.

Michelle “Moxxi” Song, a popular Twitch streamer, experienced this firsthand during a live stream. A Guild invite appeared on her screen briefly, featuring an image of male genitalia and a guild name that was also a racial slur.

This invitation was sent by a random player and was not connected to Moxxi’s friend list or the previous match she played. This situation was beyond her control, but since it happened on stream, it could potentially lead to her channel being banned or flagged for inappropriate content.

Moxxi reached out to Valve on Twitter to inquire about blocking similar actions in the future. Other Dota streamers like Janne “Gorgc” Stefanovski have also encountered similar incidents while live, although in Gorgc’s case, it happened while scrolling through the Guild listings.

Valve is expected to implement privacy filters and other protective measures to prevent such incidents. In the meantime, players and streamers should exercise caution as inappropriate images and Guild names are prevalent.
