The Journey of North American Imports

Life in Esports: A Hero’s Journey

Joseph Campbell’s famous concept of the “hero’s journey” can be seen in literature, but it also applies to the world of esports. In this paradigm, an unprepared or unwilling youngster embarks on a mission into the unknown and ultimately becomes a hero. Team Liquid’s recent performance at ESL Cologne 2016 is a perfect example of this mythic journey in the realm of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Out of the Ordinary: Departure

The first step of the hero’s journey involves leaving behind the familiar and venturing into the unknown. For esports players, this may simply mean moving to a different country to compete. North American teams have been known to give talented international players a chance to shine, despite the challenges of adapting to a new culture and environment. This journey mirrors the initial phase of Campbell’s monomyth.

Road of Trials: Initiation

Once the hero has left their comfort zone, they face various trials and challenges along the way. In North American Counter-Strike, talented players from different backgrounds often struggle to find synergy in new teams. However, with the emergence of skilled leaders within the North American scene, players like S1mple and Mixwell have been able to showcase their talents and achieve unexpected success.

The Return Home: Return

After conquering the challenges and reaching their goal, the hero must return to the “normal” world. In esports, this means that players who have proven themselves abroad may have the opportunity to join top-tier teams in their home countries. S1mple’s journey from Ukraine to Team Liquid and his subsequent return to Europe is a prime example of this. However, not all players may be able to achieve this ideal return, as it depends on various factors.

Overall, the hero’s journey is still possible in the world of esports, with the right team, resources, and personal ability. Although not all players may be willing to embark on this arduous process, the door is open for those exceptional few who want to prove themselves on a global stage.
