Lead-up to the Grand Final
The grand final for $500,000 is here in Cologne. Defending champions SK Gaming, formerly known as Luminosity, will face off against Liquid. SK previously beat Liquid at MLG Columbus 2016. But this Liquid roster is stronger than ever.
Map Selection
SK Gaming’s automatic veto is cache, so it’s unlikely to be picked. The remaining maps of overpass, cobblestone, mirage, and train are all within SK Gaming’s pool. Liquid will likely avoid overpass and stick with their best map, cobblestone.
Pistol Rounds vs. Later Rounds in the Half
SK Gaming has a high success rate in the first three rounds and are heavily reliant on pistol round success. In contrast, Liquid has been successful in later rounds, making comebacks despite slow starts.
In-game Roles and Individual Match-ups
Both teams have dedicated AWPers and superstars, but there is a clear difference in leadership. SK is led by FalleN, while Liquid’s coach peacemaker is the tactical brain. SK Gaming’s FalleN has been most successful in getting opening kills.
SK Gaming has been the best team in the world for the past few months and has the experience of being in a major grand final. They are the favorites to win.
Liquid’s case rests on s1mple’s performance, but the team has shown great firepower and teamwork. This could be the hardest CS:GO major win if Liquid can beat Na’Vi, Fnatic, and SK Gaming.
If SK Gaming wins, they become the second team to win two CS:GO majors and they solidify their claim as the most successful team of 2016. Coldzera could also potentially win his second MVP at a major.
If Liquid wins, their victory will go down as the hardest CS:GO major win to date. Hiko finally gets a major win and s1mple could win the MVP, silencing the doubters.
Overall, it’s a battle between two contrasting styles. SK Gaming is the world’s best team, but Liquid has been the hottest team in the tournament. Cobblestone will be a crucial map, but the final outcome is uncertain.
