Cloud9 pulls off surprising upset against SK in CS:GO Subaru Invitational triumph

Cloud9 Wins Subaru’s Online CS:GO Tournament

Cloud9 emerged as champions in Subaru’s first-ever online Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament, showcasing their dominance in North America.

In their path to the finals of the eight-team tournament, Cloud9 swept both NRG Esports and CLG with a score of 2-0. The match against NRG was a breeze for C9, as they convincingly defeated them on Cobblestone (16-3) and Train (16-9). Against CLG, who had just scored a sweeping victory against OpTic Gaming, C9 faced more resistance. However, the blue team managed to secure victories on Train (16-14) and Inferno (16-12). A key moment in the series was a remarkable one-versus-three clutch by Mike “shroud” Grzesiek on Train’s B site, which not only won them the map but also prevented possible losses on Inferno and Cobblestone.

In the grand finals, Cloud9 faced off against SK Gaming, marking a rematch of last year’s ESL Pro League S4 Playoff Finals, which Cloud9 had won with a 2-1 score. Despite SK’s advantage in map picks (Cobblestone, Train, and Inferno), thanks to their recent victories in cs_summit and IEM Sydney, C9 surprised them.

On Cobblestone, C9 performed admirably, ending the map with a 16-12 victory. Notable standout performances came from Marcelo “coldzera” David of SK, who secured an incredible one-versus-four kill on B site, and Jordan “n0thing” Gilbert of C9, who achieved an impressive thirty kills and a 107.4 ADR. These contributions were pivotal in Cloud9’s win.

The second map, Train, proved to be more challenging for Cloud9 as they traded rounds with SK on both Terrorist and Counter-Terrorist sides. Despite SK leading 11-9 late in the game, Cloud9 rallied and won the map 16-14. The match concluded with a successful defense of A site by Cloud9. Timothy “autimatic” Ta performed exceptionally well with a 26-25 score and a 101.0 ADR.

Cloud9’s surprising victory over SK Gaming in the online tournament earned them their first tournament win of 2017 and a prize of $10,000 from the $20,000 prize pool. Their next offline event will be the ESL Pro League Season 5 Playoff Finals in Dallas, Texas from May 31 to June 4.
