A determined Pokémon Scarlet and Violet player is hard at work, battling through a sea of mice Pokémon. Their goal? To catch one of the game’s rarest shiny Pokémon.
For those of you familiar with Pokémon, you probably have an idea of what’s happening. If you’re not, or need a quick refresher, let’s talk about Tandemaus. This creature is well-known among players.
Tandemaus stands out in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet because it can evolve into two different forms. These are called the family of four and the family of three. When Tandemaus evolves into Maushold, you’ll most likely see the family of four form. This form is pretty common.
However, getting the family of three form is a game of luck. There’s only a 1/100 chance to evolve Tandemaus into this rare form. Add shiny hunting to the mix, and the odds of finding a shiny family of three Maushold skyrocket to almost impossible levels. This explains why our gamer has encountered nearly 300 shiny Tandemauses with no luck yet.
Why Maushold?
You might wonder, why go through all this trouble for Maushold? Interestingly, Maushold is one of the less impressive shinies in the game. You can barely notice it’s a shiny with just a glance.
This isn’t the first time a player has tackled near-impossible odds in Pokémon. Back in January, another player beat the 1/68,300 odds to catch a shiny Dudunsparce in its three-segment form. Like Tandemaus, getting a shiny Dunsparce is a 1/683 chance. Evolving it into a three-segment form? Another 1/683 chance. The stars really aligned for that lucky player.
