League of Legends’ 2021 preseason adjustments will prioritize a comprehensive overhaul of the item system

League of Legends Preseason 2021 to Feature Revamped Items

In the upcoming 2021 League of Legends preseason, items will receive a major overhaul to enhance the gameplay experience. Mark “Scruffy” Yetter, the lead gameplay designer at League of Legends, recently shared the preseason plans, stating that the item system will be completely revamped. The goal is to create the “ideal item system” and improve on areas that are not fulfilling their potential.

What to Expect in the Revamped Item System

Around 34 percent of the existing items will be retained, while 33 percent will be improved and the remaining 33 percent will be new additions. The current item system is considered to provide a balanced power curve, but there are areas that need improvement, such as game-to-game variance and an intuitive, user-friendly system. The preseason goals include making the itemization process quick and maintaining iconic equipment for familiarization. The revamped system aims to add excitement, enhance player mastery, and encourage strategic choices in every game.

Principles of the New Item System

The new item system will adhere to specific principles to achieve its goals. Items will have a clear, unique, and single purpose with no confusing overlap. Two main archetypes will be introduced: contextual purpose and kit augment. Contextual purpose items can be situationally picked based on the opposing team, while kit augments will be compatible with any champion in any game. Additionally, items will provide interesting build paths and contribute to a healthy game overall without compromising counterplay and weaknesses.

A Revamped Item Shop for Clarity and Accessibility

The item shop will also undergo a makeover to improve clarity and accessibility, making it easier for players to navigate and find the items they need.
