Riot responds to LoL player demands with upcoming changes to emotes

League of Legends Emote Wheel Gets an Upgrade in Recent Patches

In recent years, emotes have become a common feature in games, and League of Legends is no exception. Since their introduction six years ago, emotes in League have seen minimal changes, with a few adjustments to the user interface and occasional additions of new emotes.

However, with the release of Patch 13.8 and the ongoing introduction of changes from Patch 13.9 on the League Public Beta Environment (PBE), players have noticed a significant update to the emote system. Additional slots have been added to the emote wheel, allowing players to equip up to nine emotes at once.

These extra slots reportedly replace situational emotes, such as “First Blood” or “Ace”. While this means losing dedicated slots for specific in-game moments, players now have the option to equip more emotes and express themselves to their heart’s content.

This change to the emote system has been highly anticipated by League players for quite some time. With a collection of 290 emotes to choose from, finding the desired emote was often a challenge. Previously, players could only equip up to five emotes in their wheel, limiting their options.

However, not all players are pleased with these emote tweaks, labeling them as “dumb” due to the limitation of having just one emote wheel. Some users pointed out technical issues and potential negative impacts on gameplay if multiple emote wheels or commands were added. In fast-paced MOBA games where seconds count, the addition of multiple wheels could lead to delays in finding the appropriate emote, potentially affecting the outcome of the game.

Despite the mixed reception, the expanded emote wheel is considered a positive step forward, even if it currently offers just four additional slots. It provides players with more options for self-expression and adds a level of personalization to the gaming experience.
