Riot Contemplates the Addition of Tap Controls in League of Legends: Wild Rift

League of Legends: Wild Rift could add tap controls based on demand

Recent Twitter interactions suggest that tap controls may be considered for inclusion in League of Legends: Wild Rift in the future. Brain “FeralPony” Feeney, the design lead of Wild Rift, addressed a user’s query about tap controls, stating that Riot Games is not currently exploring this feature. However, he mentioned that if there is a significant demand for tap controls, Riot would contemplate adding it to the game.

Joystick controls in the current version of Wild Rift

Presently, the game functions on joystick controls. The joystick is positioned on the left side of the screen, while buttons on the right side are used for attacking and activating abilities.

Tap controls in mobile MOBAs

Tap controls were initially introduced in mobile MOBAs with the release of Vainglory in November 2014. This control scheme enables players to move their heroes and attack by tapping on the screen, similar to how PC players use their cursor for movement, attacks, and ability targeting.

FeralPony highlighted that implementing tap controls would require a significant amount of work, potentially impacting the addition of essential features, bug fixes, and performance improvements in the game.

Alpha testing and release plans for Wild Rift

Riot is currently conducting its first alpha test for Wild Rift in Brazil and the Philippines. This test will run until June 26, with a limited number of players from these regions being invited to participate. Details about the official release date of Wild Rift are still scarce, but Riot Games has previously stated its intention to launch the mobile version before the end of 2020.
