Ashland University’s First Fortnite Esports Scholarship Recipient
Ashland University has awarded its first esports scholarship for Fortnite: Battle Royale. The recipient, Devin Sharp of Louisville, Kentucky, has received a scholarship worth around $4,000 towards his tuition. Sharp expressed his excitement, stating, “Honestly, I’m still somewhat in shock. Hearing it being said in those words, it’s nothing short of mind-blowing. On the other hand, it also motivates me to keep grinding, because it’s proof that hard work towards your dreams really can pay off.”
The Pioneer in Fortnite Scholarships
Ashland University made history by being the first school to offer a college scholarship specifically for Fortnite. The program is set to begin in the fall. In addition to Fortnite, the university also offers esports scholarships for other games, as announced in February. They plan to build an esports arena and a dedicated practice and competition area to support a team of four players for Fortnite and other games. Josh Buchanan, the head coach of Ashland Esports, hopes that a collegiate league for Fortnite will be established in the future.
Fortnite’s Impact on Esports
The rapid growth of Fortnite has been astonishing, and Epic Games’ recent announcement of a $100 million prize pool for esports this year has attracted the attention of investors and organizations. The esports scene for Fortnite is still in its early stages, but it holds much potential for players to showcase their skills, creativity, and innovation.
