Twitch’s Highlights Reveal Two Communities that Shaped the Platform’s Growth in 2022

Twitch Recaps 2022: Growing Communities and Notable Tags

Twitch recaps are back with the 2022 edition, and the platform started by giving a recap of itself. According to the stats provided by Twitch, there were 21 billion hours watched and 788 million hours streamed. However, what stood out the most were the growing communities.

While popular emotes like Jebaited, Kappa, and Pogchamp led the way, the dominant category on Twitch was Just Chatting. But it was the “Year in Tags” section that highlighted what makes Twitch a unique place.

Among the notable tags on the platform in 2022, “VTuber” and “LGBTQIAplus” stood out. Alongside more general gaming terms like “multiplayer” and “PvP,” these tags demonstrate the impact of streaming on community growth.

In general, Twitch tags are used to describe channels and help them stand out. By using specific tags, broadcasters can assist viewers in finding the precise content they’re looking for.

For VTubers, this is especially useful. VTubing refers to streaming using a virtual avatar instead of a webcam, providing a different experience than traditional streaming. However, VTubing itself is not a category on the platform, so the use of appropriate tags becomes even more important.

The same applies to the LGBTQIA+ community. Those who use this tag aim to provide a welcoming space where LGBTQIA+ individuals can feel comfortable. Online communities can often be toxic and close-minded, but adding this tag to a stream allows creators to identify their channels as safe spaces, free from judgment based on sexuality or gender identity.
