Report: Twitch removing re-run feature from its platform

Twitch Considering Retirement of its Re-Broadcasting Feature

Twitch may be looking to retire its re-broadcasting feature following alleged code leaks, as reported by Zach Bussey. This feature, added to Twitch in 2018, allowed streamers to broadcast previously streamed content while offline. The rise of 24/7 Twitch channels, particularly in the ASMR community, was a result of the practice of continually running re-run content.

Prior Issues with Re-Run Streams

In 2020, re-run streams faced push back after the VALORANT drops controversy. Some streamers labeled re-run content as “Live” and falsely advertised content drops for the game. Twitch took down these streams after being exposed by popular streamers like TimTheTatman and Summit1g. Twitch then revised its rules regarding re-streamed content to prevent spam, scams, or other malicious activities.

Potential End of the Re-Run Feature

While not yet officially confirmed by Twitch, streamer journalist Zach Bussey reported that the streaming platform intends to end the re-broadcasting program. Twitch has recently rolled back several programs, including its desktop application and the deactivation of the “friends” functionality. This suggests Twitch may be tightening its services and reducing its website features.

Reactions to Twitch’s Potential Move

The potential end of the re-run feature received mixed reactions from viewers and streamers. Some welcomed the decision, citing the feature’s limited use. However, others advocated for the program, highlighting its usefulness for streamers with audiences in different time zones. Streamer cjayride, for example, expressed support for re-runs in reaching a wider audience.

Concerns were also raised about the impact on Reckful’s memorial stream. Reckful’s channel continuously re-broadcasts his old content, as per the streamer’s wishes prior to his death. Stream moderator Glassen expressed concern about potentially ending this memorial stream with the removal of the re-broadcasting feature. It remains unclear if streaming old VODs instead of re-runs would be a viable alternative.

The Uncertain Fate of the Re-Run Feature

While Twitch has not yet provided confirmation regarding the discontinuation of the re-run feature, its future seems uncertain.
