Twitch updates guidelines on sexually explicit content: What you need to know

Twitch, the popular streaming platform owned by Amazon, has recently provided an update on its guidelines regarding sexually explicit content. Although sexually explicit content has always been against the platform’s rules, Twitch has now clarified exactly what falls into this category. It is important to note that these guidelines do not result in any immediate changes or alterations to how Twitch enforces this policy. However, Twitch has indicated that its Sexual Content Policy may undergo further modifications in the future.

What is considered sexually explicit content on Twitch?

According to Twitch’s official blog, sexually explicit content is defined as any form of pornographic or sexually explicit material. This includes broadcasting, uploading, soliciting, offering, or linking to such content. Additionally, the platform prohibits users from offering or soliciting sexual content in exchange for money, services, or items of value.

Examples of sexually explicit content identified by Twitch include:

  • Explicit, simulated, or implied sexual activities, such as oral, anal, or vaginal sex, with associated audio that suggests sex-related sounds.
  • Explicit, simulated, or implied masturbation, whether self or mutual, with actions like groping or caressing genitals.
  • Display of sexual bodily fluids.
  • Engaging in phone sex or chat sex, or any other activity that involves creating sexual content.
  • Advertisement or solicitation of sexual services, including prostitution, escort services, sexual massages, and filmed sexual activity.

Furthermore, Twitch restricts creators from streaming in locations where nudity or sexual activity may be present. Directly linking to pornographic or sexually explicit content within live streams, chat, or personal bios is also prohibited.

However, Twitch does allow users to include links to their personal websites or social media handles that may incidentally contain pornographic or sexually explicit content links. Users will not face repercussions for sharing such incidental links.

Twitch assures its users that the updated guidelines aim to provide clearer expectations, with more information on this topic to be shared in the months ahead. The platform appreciates the patience of its users as it continues to navigate this complex issue.
