Summer Games Quickens Schedule Online for Health Safety During COVID-19 Pandemic

Games Done Quick Moves to Online Format Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused cancellations of conventions, events, and esports tournaments worldwide. However, Games Done Quick (GDQ) is defying the odds by transitioning to an online-only format for its Summer Games Done Quick speedrunning marathon. The event aims to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. Today, GDQ has released the schedule for the highly anticipated event.

GDQ Embraces Online Format

Originally scheduled to take place in Bloomington, Minnesota, the event had to be altered due to the national state of emergency declared by President Trump in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing that an in-person event would not be possible, GDQ’s director of marketing and business development, Kasumi Yogi, expressed excitement about the online format. Yogi emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of participants and viewers during this global crisis.

Raising Funds for a Good Cause

GDQ is a semi-annual event that utilizes speedrunning of PvE video games to engage viewers and collect donations for various charities. Previously, the event achieved a record-breaking milestone in 2019, raising over $3 million. Since 2013, Summer Games Done Quick has exclusively supported Doctors Without Borders, while the winter event, Awesome Games Done Quick, focuses on fundraising for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
