Ovilee May faces DMCA takedown on Twitter

DMCA Notices Extend to Twitter as Ovilee May Receives One

The recent surge of DMCA notices on Twitch has now reached other platforms, such as Twitter. Ovilee May, a former broadcaster for the League of Legends Championship Series, announced that she received a DMCA notice personally.

May shared a screenshot this morning, showing that her Twitter account had been temporarily locked. While she was able to regain access to her account, this incident shed light on Twitter’s policies regarding DMCA notices, which are somewhat similar to Twitch’s procedures.

Twitter DMCA Notice and Its Consequences

“Your account has been locked because Twitter received a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Notice for content posted on your account,” read the notification May received. “Upon receipt of a valid DMCA notice, Twitter will remove the identified material. Twitter has a policy for repeat copyright infringers, which may result in account suspension. Accumulating multiple DMCA strikes may lead to account suspension.”

May stated that her DMCA notice was issued for using 10 seconds of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” in a Team Liquid update teaser. She also mentioned that notices are being sent to those who have utilized music by Shakira, Beyonce, and artists in the country and rap genres.

Continuation of DMCA Troubles

Today’s news comes after a week where numerous content creators on Twitch experienced a wave of DMCA notices. In response, Twitch urged all creators to remove any past broadcasts or clips that could potentially trigger a DMCA takedown notice.
