VALORANT Patch 6.0 prioritizes winning with competitive changes

Changes to Ranked System in VALORANT Episode Six Aim to Simplify the Ranked Grind

The ranked system in VALORANT has undergone some significant changes in Episode Six, making it easier for players to navigate the competitive ladder. Patch 6.0 introduced these changes, focusing on the way ranked rating (RR) gains and losses are calculated.

Starting from the first day of Episode Six, Act One, players will notice that their RR gains and losses are now more dependent on overall wins and losses, rather than the round differential of each match. This alteration allows for a more streamlined progression through the ranks.

Previously, players experienced significant fluctuations in RR based on the round differential. These fluctuating results often led to rapid promotions or demotions for players. However, with the latest changes, the difference between the winning and losing team’s round scores will have less impact on the RR changes. As a result, drastic fluctuations caused by one-sided blowout victories or defeats will be minimized.

According to the patch notes, the developers emphasized that winning remains the most crucial factor in climbing the ranked ladder. Therefore, securing victories remains the primary way for players to progress in the rankings.

In addition to these changes, adjustments have been made for players whose ranks are far from their matchmaking rating (MMR). These players will now see their RR gains more closely tied to their individual performances rather than the round differential. This alteration helps players converge their rank and MMR faster. Players who perform well below their MMR will earn more RR for a good game, while those performing well above their MMR will not be harshly penalized.

The VALORANT development team at Riot implemented these changes based on feedback from players. Many players felt that they were not adequately rewarded for their performance in close matches, while others believed that the RR losses from losing a game were too severe. These changes address these concerns and aim to provide a more balanced and rewarding ranked experience.

Players should note that these changes will coincide with a rank reset at the beginning of Episode Six. After completing their placement matches, players can expect to start Episode Six slightly below the rank they achieved at the end of Episode Five.
