The Impact of Fake Twitter Accounts on Dota 2 Roster Moves

Twitter “Fake News” Problem Affects Dota 2 Scene

Over the past decade, fake accounts on Twitter have been a significant issue, spreading misinformation across various industries and sectors. Despite efforts by Twitter to combat this problem, it has only worsened after Elon Musk introduced verification via Twitter Blue. Now, even the professional Dota 2 scene is not spared from the misinformation plague.

Recent Misinformation Incident Involving Wolf Team

As recently as November 23, a fake account claiming to be Wolf Team, a Brazilian Dota 2 organization founded in December 2021, fooled people into thinking that the team had disbanded. The account announced, “Today, we are announcing our farewell to the competitive Dota 2 scene. We appreciate all the support from the community and wish the best of luck to hFn, 4dr, Tavo, Kingrd, and KJ.”

While Liquipedia and BTSBrazil initially fell for the fake news, they have since corrected their mistake. However, the incident caused quite a stir within the Brazilian Dota 2 community.

The Troll Account Behind It All

It turns out that the account responsible for the misinformation is a well-known troll account. Its bio states, “99 percent of the things it posts are irony, while the remaining one percent could be true.”

Despite these false rumors, the Wolf Team roster remains intact and is preparing for the upcoming Dota Pro Circuit 2022-2023 season, starting in December.

However, as the roster lock approaches and more teams finalize their lineups, it’s likely that troll accounts spreading misinformation will continue to create confusion and dupe unsuspecting fans.

Let’s hope that the Dota 2 community remains vigilant and verifies information from credible sources to avoid falling victim to such hoaxes.
