G2 Esports: A Year of Living and Dying by the Sword in 2016

The Unique System of G2 Esports in CS:GO

In the world of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, every player or team has their own system. The clarity and strictness of this system is determined by the players themselves. There is no rulebook or guide to creating the framework of how a team plays. The only way to create a successful system is through intuition, experience, and a deep understanding of the players.

In the history of CS:GO, no one system is the most dominant. Different teams have achieved success through different systems. EnVyUs briefly became the best team in 2015 by relying on their individual players, while VeryGames became the best team in 2013 using tactical approaches. There is no universally “right” system; the perfect system is one that is designed specifically for the strengths and weaknesses of the team’s players.

The system of G2 Esports is particularly interesting because it lacks a defined structure. According to Adil “ScreaM” Benrlitom, they don’t focus on tactics, but rather on preparing themselves. Their system revolves around catering entirely to their star players. With very few set strategies, G2 relies on the individual skill and in-game understanding of Richard “shox” Papillon and ScreaM to overpower their opponents. This simple approach can be both brilliant in wins and incomprehensible in losses.

When G2 is at their best, their movement across the map is like a beautifully choreographed dance of pure skill. While other elite teams focus on intelligent and tactical play, G2 remains an isolated outlier.

G2’s system has both contributed to their success and brought about their downfall. They rely heavily on their star players, which means that if these players don’t perform, the team suffers. Their game plan revolves around generating confidence for ScreaM and shox to excel. This strategy has produced impressive performances from both players in tournaments, but it has also led to catastrophic losses.

During a two-month period in 2016, G2 was untouchable. This was a time when everything clicked and their stars shined. However, a break in the tournament circuit disrupted their momentum and their stars’ impact was numbed. This led to a downward spiral for G2, finishing the year in a catastrophic fashion with poor results and losses to weaker teams.

The Creation of G2’s System

Before G2’s current system, the team was defined by their former leader Ex6TenZ. His tactical approach was focused on micro-managing his players and executing set plays. However, this system was not as effective as it had been historically. With other teams shifting leadership responsibilities to coaches, G2 was left with a team that couldn’t reach its full potential. After a disappointing performance, Ex6TenZ and his system were replaced by bodyy, and shox took over as the leader.

While G2’s system is far from perfect and frustrating at times, it has also produced some of the highest moments in 2016. They were the only team that could challenge the dominant Brazilian teams. G2 stood out among the elite teams with its unique and broken system. Despite the frustrations, G2’s system has brought them moments of greatness that they wouldn’t have achieved with a more conventional approach.
