G2 secures playoff advantage with Group A tiebreakers at ESL Pro League Finals

Group A of the ESL Pro League Season 5 Finals came to an end yesterday, with G2 Esports taking the top spot. Now, the stage is set for the quarterfinals today.

Group A saw a lot of action yesterday, with tiebreakers being played due to the Round Robin format. Team EnVyUs, SK Gaming, and Fnatic were all tied because of G2 Esports’ win against Fnatic. All the tiebreaker matches took place on Train.

Immortals and Cloud9 were both eliminated from the tournament. Immortals lost to EnVyUs, while Cloud9 suffered defeats against Fnatic and Immortals. Cloud9 finished with a 1-4 record, and Immortals finished with a 2-3 record.

G2 Esports

G2 secured first place by defeating SK Gaming 16-6 on Cobblestone, SK’s map pick. G2 managed to counter SK’s strategies and took an early lead of 10-5. They continued to dominate on the Terrorist side and secured the victory against the Brazilians.

In their match against Fnatic on Overpass, G2 faced tough competition. Fnatic used unconventional strategies, but economic struggles forced them to rely on CZ-75 pistols. G2 eventually closed out the game with a 16-11 victory. Kenny “kennyS” Schrub played a crucial role with 30 kills and an average damage per round of 111.6.

Team EnVyUs

EnVyUs had impressive wins against Immortals and SK Gaming. They defeated Immortals 16-2 on Cobblestone and dominated SK on Inferno. Cédric ‘RpK’ Guipouy was exceptional in both matches, with 46 kills and an ADR of 125.2 against Immortals, and an incredible ADR of 147.8 against SK.

To secure their spot in the playoffs, EnVyUs had to go the distance against Fnatic on Train. After three overtimes, they closed out the game with a 10-6 victory. Vincent “Happy” Schopenhauer’s one-versus-one AWP clutch against SK’s captain Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo played a crucial role in their win.

SK Gaming

SK did not perform as well as they did in the earlier stages of the group. They suffered heavy losses against both French teams, losing 16-6 to G2 and 16-3 to EnVyUs. Their first tiebreaker against EnVyUs didn’t go well either.

Luckily, SK redeemed themselves with a 4-0 sweep of Fnatic on Train in the final tiebreaker of Group A.

The playoff picture

G2’s first-place finish in the group stage secured them a spot in the semifinals. EnVyUs finished second and will face Team Liquid in the quarterfinals, while SK finished third and will go up against mousesports.

The match between SK and mouz could favor SK due to their versatile map pool, but an upset from mouz is still possible. The same holds true for Liquid, who were in top form yesterday. If Liquid can maintain their performance, they will be a tough team to beat.
