A Guide on Playing Cyberpunk 2077 in Third-Person Perspective

The absence of a third-person mode in Cyberpunk 2077

The opening screen of Cyberpunk 2077 makes a bold statement: “In Night City, looks are everything.” However, players have expressed their desire for a third-person mode to enjoy the game from a different perspective. But is there really a third-person mode in Cyberpunk 2077, and if so, how can it be accessed?

No dedicated third-person mode

Unfortunately, there is no dedicated third-person mode in Cyberpunk 2077. Despite early gameplay demos showcasing a third-person mode and the game’s engine initially being built for third-person gameplay, the feature was ultimately removed during development for unknown reasons. However, players who want to appreciate their character’s appearance are not completely out of luck.

Other ways to view your character

Your character, V, is fully represented on the inventory screen and can be seen in mirrors throughout the game world. Additionally, you have the option to enter Photo Mode, allowing you to capture customizable snapshots of V’s daily life in Night City. While these alternatives provide some means of viewing your character, they do not fully substitute for a third-person perspective throughout the entire 70-hour runtime of the game.

Mods: the only way to play in third-person

For PC players, mods offer the only solution to experience Cyberpunk 2077 in third person. The “JB Third Person” mod, with over half a million downloads, provides various configurable options to enhance your third-person gameplay. Unfortunately, console players do not have this option available to them.

It’s possible that the absence of a third-person view was a consequence of the game’s rushed development, along with other missing features. However, with the experience gained from developing Cyberpunk 2077 and the potential for a sequel, players can hope that CD Projekt Red will include a native third-person mode in future releases.
