Liquid and FaZe secure playoff spots at the ECS Season 5 Finals

The ECS Season Five Finals: Halfway Through and Only Four Teams Left

The competition at the ECS Season Five Finals has been intense, with eight teams battling it out in London. Now, after another day of thrilling matches, only four teams remain in the playoff stage.

Team Liquid and FaZe Clan emerged victorious in their respective decider matches, securing their spots in the playoffs. They defeated Fnatic and G2 Esports, who had previously eliminated Cloud9 and Luminosity Gaming.

Liquid vs. Fnatic: A Close Matchup

The match between Liquid and Fnatic seemed one-sided at first, but the Swedes put up a fight on Inferno. Although Fnatic struggled on their map pick, Nuke, they managed to keep up with Liquid on the scoreboard during the second map. However, once Liquid won the second pistol round and gained momentum, it became an uphill battle for Fnatic. In the end, Liquid emerged victorious with a close score of 16-13. While no standout player emerged from Liquid, the entire team performed consistently. In a post-game interview, Epitacio “TACO” de Melo responded to Jesper “JW” Wecksell’s previous comment about Liquid needing to “be humble” due to their recent success.

FaZe vs. G2: FaZe Prevails

FaZe faced off against the new iteration of G2, who had just defeated Luminosity Gaming. Kenny “kennyS” Schrub proved to be a formidable opponent for FaZe, scoring 32 kills on Inferno, 16 of which were with an AWP. However, G2’s efforts were in vain as FaZe emerged victorious with a score of 16-9. Despite winning three out of four pistol rounds, G2 struggled against FaZe on both Inferno and Mirage. Havard “rain” Nygaard was the standout player for FaZe in map two, Mirage, with 29 kills. Kevin “Ex6TenZ” Droolans, G2’s new in-game leader, led the team but couldn’t secure a win. G2’s performance shows that they still have a long way to go before becoming a top contender in the world.

Elimination Matches: Cloud9 vs. Fnatic and G2 Esports vs. Luminosity Gaming

Cloud9 and Fnatic faced off in a close match with Fnatic emerging victorious. Fnatic won Overpass 16-14, Train 16-9, and Cache 16-13, securing their spot in the playoffs. In the match between G2 Esports and Luminosity Gaming, G2 dominated with wins on Overpass (16-9) and Cache (16-11).

Decider Matches: Team Liquid vs. Fnatic and FaZe Clan vs. G2 Esports

In the decider matches, Liquid secured their victory over Fnatic by winning Nuke 16-5 and Inferno 16-13. FaZe Clan also emerged victorious against G2 Esports, winning Inferno 16-9 and Mirage 16-10.

Only Astralis, NRG Esports, Liquid, and FaZe remain in the ECS Finals. The semifinals will begin tomorrow at 6:15am CT, starting with NRG Esports vs. Liquid. This will be followed by FaZe vs. Astralis at 9:15am CT. The grand final, a best-of-three match, will take place immediately after.
