Cyberpunk 2077 Player Base Flourishes After the Release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Since the debut of the web anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077 has attracted over a million users in the past week.
Despite facing criticism for game-breaking bugs and save file crashes after its release in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has experienced a resurgence in its player base following the success of CD Projekt’s Netflix animated series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which premiered on September 13, 2022.
According to the official Twitter account of the game, “Each day of this week Night City has been visited by one million players, both new and returning.” The message expressed gratitude to the players for their continued support and engagement.
Cyberpunk 2077’s player base has seen significant growth after the release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and has reached a peak of over 85,000 concurrent players. New players have also been buying the game, making it the second highest-selling game globally in terms of weekly sales, only behind Steam Deck.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone 10-episode story that revolves around a teenager named David Martinez. After a tragic event in his life, he becomes an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw known as a cyberpunk—trying to survive in Night City.
The web anime has received praise from critics for its well-developed characters, animation, and worldbuilding. It has even earned a perfect 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been compared to Riot Games’ popular Netflix animated series Arcane by Forbes.
In addition to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077 will keep its fans engaged with upcoming content, including the expansion Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, scheduled for release in 2023. With the show’s success, major in-game updates, and a planned expansion, the Cyberpunk series is poised for a comeback.
