CD Projekt Red Allegedly Facing Investigation over Cyberpunk 2077 Release

CD Projekt Red, the developer of the recently released game Cyberpunk 2077, is under investigation by Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection. This investigation is to determine if the developer misled players about the game’s playability on previous generation consoles. It will also examine how CD Projekt Red is addressing the various issues with the game and responding to the concerns of dissatisfied customers.

According to a report by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, the official consumer watchdog in Poland is looking into potential penalties for CD Projekt Red. These penalties could include a fine of 10% of the game’s profits, mandatory refunds required by the government, or compensation in the form of free digital content and gadgets for players who purchased the game on PS4 or Xbox One.

Despite the game’s launch in November 2020 after multiple delays, it was plagued by numerous bugs and glitches on current-gen consoles and PC, rendering it nearly unplayable on last-gen consoles. Microsoft, Sony, and CD Projekt Red offered refunds to players who purchased the game on last-gen consoles, with Sony even removing the game from the PlayStation store.

Nevertheless, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 13 million copies, taking returns into account. However, the company’s reputation has suffered, and the outcome of the investigation could have further consequences.
