CLG Secures Win Against FlyQuest to Advance to Regional Qualifier Finals
CLG emerged victorious with a 3-1 victory over FlyQuest in a thrilling matchup, setting them up for the Regional Qualifier finals.
Facing FlyQuest brought back memories for CLG fans of the Spring Split playoffs when FlyQuest knocked CLG out. However, FlyQuest’s upset win over Team Dignitas on Sept. 8 made this matchup all the more daunting.
CLG should never have underestimated FlyQuest heading into the matchup. Their concerns were validated after game one.
In a peculiar draft phase, CLG opted for Dr. Mundo and Fiora in game one. While the Fiora pick made sense as a counter to Galio, Dr. Mundo seemed out of place. The composition CLG drafted was susceptible to counters from Executioner’s Calling and Bramble Vest.
As expected, FlyQuest’s teamfight became unstoppable once they acquired these items. Dr. Mundo’s self-healing was nullified, and Fiora’s attacks against FlyQuest tanks harmed herself.
After losing game one, CLG abandoned off-meta compositions and resorted to standard play, leading to FlyQuest’s downfall.
Despite FlyQuest’s solid early macro play, CLG outmatched them in the mid and late game. FlyQuest’s spread thin strategy backfired, allowing CLG to secure numerous mid game picks effortlessly. These picks provided the leads necessary for CLG to close out the games, whether through securing the Baron or taking down inhibitors.
Once CLG had a significant lead past 25 minutes, FlyQuest had no chance of making a comeback. CLG executed their sieges safely, avoiding unnecessary risks by refraining from diving towers as they closed out the games.
Following their victory over FlyQuest, CLG will now face Cloud9 in the Regional Qualifier finals. The outcome of this match will determine North America’s final representatives at the upcoming World Championship. The Regional Qualifier finals are scheduled to start on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 3pm ET.
