Riot Declares Smurfing as Destructive to League of Legends

The Ranking System in League of Legends Becomes More Challenging

League of Legends has become a more challenging climb in recent seasons. Riot Games intentionally made changes to the ranking system to discourage alt accounts and smurfing. They want players to stick to their main accounts to maintain a fair and enjoyable game experience for everyone.

However, some players believe that Riot’s approach to fixing the smurfing issue may not be effective. The changes made to the system result in MMR increasing at the same pace, while rank takes longer to catch up. This may discourage regular players from climbing the ranks.

In contrast, Valve took a different approach to smurfing in Dota 2. They focused on improving their ranking system and speeding up the climbing process for players who consistently performed above their skill bracket. This approach seems to have succeeded in Dota 2.

For now, it seems that smurfs will continue to be a part of the League of Legends community. Riot clarified that they did not change the climbing process in Season 10 as a response to smurfing.

Unfortunately, the tweet from Riot’s player support regarding the changes was incorrect, causing confusion among players.
