Riot’s Plan for New Anti-Cheat System: Boosting Security in League of Legends and Project A

Riot recently announced its strategy for a new anti-cheat system, outlining how it will impact League of Legends and its upcoming first-person shooter Project A, as well as future games. This move aims to enhance the security and fairness of gameplay.

To address the increasing challenges posed by cheaters, Riot has devised a “kernel drive” approach. The kernel, which operates at the core of a computer’s operating system, holds complete control over all system functions. Consequently, a kernel driver provides the highest level of protection for any game or software.

In the past few years, cheat developers have exploited vulnerabilities in Windows’ signing verification to run applications at the kernel level. This creates problems because code executed in kernel-mode can manipulate system calls, making it difficult to detect illegitimate results. Riot recognizes the need to counteract these tactics and ensure the integrity of gameplay data.

Riot plans to leverage a kernel driver in the future to counter cheats running at a higher privilege level than the current anti-cheat system. This proactive measure will create a smoother gaming experience for players of League of Legends and particularly Project A.

Various third-party anti-cheat systems, including EasyAntiCheat, Battleye, and Xigncode 3, already utilize kernel drivers for game protection. Riot will be aligning with this industry trend to bolster the security of their games.

The main goal of this upgrade is to maintain the integrity of the system and make it more difficult for cheaters to manipulate gameplay.
