League of Legends World Champion Receives 4-Year Prison Sentence for Marijuana Sales in Taiwan

Former League of Legends World Champion Toyz Sentenced to Prison for Drug Trafficking

Season two League of Legends World Champion, Lau “Toyz” Wai Kin, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison for drug trafficking, according to a report by Yahoo News Hong Kong yesterday.

According to the report, the 30-year-old still has the option to appeal the case, but has already been convicted after being arrested in 2021. Toyz was suspected of selling marijuana in Taiwan last year, which is considered a category-two narcotic according to the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act in the country.

Chance to Appeal Decision

The punishment for manufacturing, transporting, or selling marijuana in Taiwan is life imprisonment or a minimum 10-year fixed-term imprisonment. Possession with intent to sell carries a minimum five-year imprisonment and a fine. Toyz’s lawyer has argued that the player was not fully aware of Taiwanese laws due to a lack of education and frequent travel between Hong Kong and Taiwan. The defense hopes for a reduced sentence.

Toyz’s Legacy in League of Legends

Toyz is best known for his successful run at the Summoner’s Cup in 2012, where he and Taipei Assassins defeated Korea’s Azubu Frost to win the second League of Legends World Championship in history. Apart from the 2013 All-Star event in Shanghai, Worlds 2012 was the only international event of his career.

After winning the championship, Toyz joined teams like Hong Kong Esports and Raise Gaming. He also had a brief coaching stint with Fnatic as their coach during Worlds 2014. In 2018, he transitioned to management with G-Rex before ultimately stepping away from the professional League of Legends scene.
